| Southern Appalachian Artist Guild Happenings!
The prospectus and entry form for next year’s show have already been posted on the SAAG website. Dr. William U. Eiland, Director of the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, GA will select and judge next year’s show. Dr. Eiland has published several books on aspects of the arts, and he is a respected art museum authority and a sought-after speaker on art history topics. He has juried and judged a number of art exhibits in various locations, and he was highly recommended to us as a knowledgeable and competent juror. We look forward to another outstanding National Juried Show in 2012.
The Bascom Regional Exhibit
Dear Guild members, As I assume the presidency of our great association, I am again reminded of how quickly we have formed into an alliance of a wonderfully diverse collection of artisans and how much fun we’ve had along the way. In just five years we’ve put ourselves on the map regionally and nationally with our programs and juried shows. As new president, I hope to encourage others to join us and help us build upon what we’ve begun. Through both the programs we offer our members to encourage their growth and visibility and the shows we present to the general public, our goal is to further the enhancement of the arts in Appalachia. In these tough times, art is increasingly important in providing a balanced spirit through the joy and creativity it brings to our lives. SAAG Spring Member Show “Appalachian Renaissance”, May 5 through 27 Our Spring Member Show this year will be a chance for our diverse and talented members to showcase our talents in a presentation called Appalachian Renaissance, reception May 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. If you are an artist member of SAAG, or are thinking of joining our rapidly growing group, get signed up now and let the region see your talent in 2-dimentional or 3-dimentional work in this impressive collection of member talent. We know that the public will enjoy this free event so plan to come by the Art Center for a chance to see a wonderful exhibit and help us pick a “People’s Choice” award! --------Camille (Candy) Day, President (Send Me an E-Mail and Get Acquainted!)
Change in Meeting Schedule for 2012 In response to opinions expressed by numerous members in the recent member survey, we are changing the meeting schedule for 2012. Instead of monthly general meetings, we will be meeting quarterly, in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. The next meeting will be held on Thursday evening, March 8, 2012. Watch for an announcement of the program and a new starting time for the meeting. Beginning with the Spring meeting, there will routinely be refreshments and a raffle in addition to the evening's program(s). News of Members It is with great sadness, I must report the death of one of our fine artists, art supporters, and good friend, Patricia Suttles. Our prayers and our condolences go out to Bill and Todd and the rest of their family and friends. Todd indicated there would not be a service and requested donations in lieu of flowers be made to The Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association. A "Donation in Pat Suttles Memory" button has been placed on the front page of The Art Center website should you wish to remember Pat in this way, http://blueridgearts.net. You can, of course, mail or call The Art Center for other methods of remembrance. For those of you who were here to see our Christmas exhibit, Pat's clay sculptures were on display, along with Bill's paintings. We have lost one of our most vibrant colors in our palette.Welcome New Members: Tom Bush, Annie Evans, Cielos, Rojos, and C.W. & Linda Woddy!Just think, if all our members brought in one member, we could double in size! What a concept!
Stained glass artist Gail Haynie sent word that she has been named "Featured Artist" for Streuter Technologies, an adhesives manufacturer. Go to Streuter.com to find more information about Gayle and an image of her prize-winning table with a glass mosaic top. (Note: This table is no longer for sale, as it is now gracing your outgoing president's living room.) Good food, fun, and conversation was featured at the December 8 meeting. Approximately twenty members, including new members Collin Chambers and Cevonna Frazier, enjoyed the annual holiday social. Ruthie Anderson won the special raffle prize: her choice of the several small bird and holiday-themed paintings brought and discussed by Candy Day. Ruthie also won one of the four poinsettia raffle prizes. Special request: We would like to update our severely out-of-date binder containing information about our current members. Please provide a one-page bio and/or your brief artist's statement, along with a photo of yourself as an attachment to an email addressed to sarahverner@tds.net . Please do not embed the information in the message, since it cannot be printed in a suitable format. Rather, space it in a pleasing manner and attach the document to the email message. Thank you for helping to make our information current! Don't forget to check our calendar for art education classes available at The Art Center. We have a lot of new classes for the winter.
Besides the many exhibits at the Art Center, outreach to many groups both locally and nationally continues behind the scenes.
